Construction of tunnels, animal spaces and a hotel
Pairi Daiza zzo and botanical gardens have created an eighth world (the Land of the Cold), three biotopes covering a total area of nearly 7,000 m2 with walruses, polar bears, white tigers and king penguins. The major technical challenge of this project was the construction of an underground network, from whose submerged vantage point in one area visitors can watch the bears and walruses and, from another above ground, the tigers. 600 m of tunnels can accommodate more than 1.200 visitors at the same time. To make the structure more cave-like, the three-dimensional walls are coated with shot concrete. Located just above the network, a small hotel of fifty rooms divided into five units accommodates visitors, allowing them to watch the animals from sunrise to dusk.
