Belliard 40: BREEAM certification management

We built a mixed-use 25,000 m² office and residential building in the heart of Brussels. Our in-house energy and environment engineer-expert was involved in the masterplan to ensure the project would get the BREEAM "Excellent" certification rating. An action plan was implemented in order to score additional BREEAM "credits":

• be proactive by raising awareness among workers to reduce the quantity of waste;
• improve sorting by offering 12 different containers;
• recover/recycle waste through appropriate channels.

By sorting plastics, expanded polystyrene, roofing and plaster materials, the project was able to reduce the volume of general waste by 12%, for an equivalent of 12 containers. As a result, it was possible to recycle nearly 150 m³ of additional waste usually intended for incineration or a hazardous waste landfill facility. The benefits were far greater, however: with a cleaner and better organised building site, the quality of work was enhanced for all.
